While most will be preoccupied with whether or not they’ll get into their dream school, many will be shocked to receive something completely unexpected: a rejection from a safety school — a school assumed to be easy to get into. If you’ve been rejected by a safety school, you may be feeling completely devastated and wondering how this could possibly have happened. Here are some reasons that might help explain what may have gone wrong. Why People Get Rejected From a Safety School 1. Underestimating the competition While grades and test scores aren’t everything, they make up two of the most important parts of your application. Your stats should be at least better than the top 25% of the previously admitted class before considering a school to be a safety. Many aren’t aware that a lot of helpful data about the previously accepted class at colleges across the country is publicly available. 2. Not demonstrating interest â€Å"Demonstrated interest† is the degree in which a student shows their intention of enrolling in a particular school. While not all colleges take this into account, some colleges take this into major consideration. Sending an application isn’t enough to demonstrate interest. Actions that count as demonstrating interest include attending an official college tour, attending a college presentation at your high school, or meeting with an admissions officer. For colleges that track this, these activities get logged in and are taken into consideration in the decision making process. 3. Financial reasons If you applied to a school that is need aware, meaning the ability to pay for college is taken into account in admissions decisions, and you are in need of substantial financial assistance to pay for college, this may be a reason why you were rejected. Financial aid is allocated to the most competitive students first, so if a student is in need of financial aid, but is not amongst the most competitive applicants, it may lead to a rejection. 4. Not paying attention to admission rates Schools with admission rates under 15% should never be considered to be safety schools. While it may seem counterintuitive, the volume of applications that might be submitted to a safety school can make it even more competitive to get an offer. 5. Not tailoring your college application essay to the school Students sometimes take the shortcut of copying and pasting one application essay into another application without customizing the essay. It’s easy to assume that if you put your best effort into producing a solid essay for one of your reach schools, it would be good enough for your safety school application. This isn’t the case. All schools are looking for students who would be a good fit and if your essay is too generic, you may sound like any other applicant. A good, compelling essay can sometimes make the difference between Yes and No to an admissions officer, so knowing what they look for can really help. Right now, the question probably racing through your mind is: â€Å"If I didn’t get into my safety school, does that mean I’m not getting in anywhere I applied?† Not necessarily. There’s no way to predict with 100% certainty whether or not you will get into a certain college, especially if it is a competitive one. However, if you’re worried about not getting in anywhere, here are some actions you can take: Send a financial aid appeal If you’ve achieved something highly noteworthy since you submitted your application such as winning a major award, inventing something, or starting a new program at school, it may be worth a shot to send an appeal. Appeals are rarely successful, but worth a try if you are 100% convinced that your new accomplishments are pretty remarkable. Contact the admissions office to learn more about their appeal process and make sure to follow up quickly. Apply to more colleges If you mis-calibrated your likelihood of getting into the schools you applied to, look for other colleges that offer rolling admissions or later application deadlines and submit a few more applications. Consider going to community college An option that is becoming more and more attractive to students is taking general education credits at a community college and transferring to a four year university during their junior year. Not only will this give you another chance of graduating with a degree from a school you want to go to, it’ll save you a ton of money. And, your diploma will have no indication on it that you attended a community college. Consider a gap year If you’re not interested in going down the community college route and find yourself with no college offers, a gap year might be an attractive option. While this is not a highly common approach, more and more students are exploring it. A gap year full of meaningful experiences can inform what you write in application essays the following year when you apply again. Don’t lose hope Sometimes students get accepted to schools that seem more competitive yet get rejected by schools that would be classified as a â€Å"safety school.† Awaiting college application decisions is an emotional roller coaster. While it can feel deflating to receive a rejection, don’t panic. Give yourself some time to recover (talk it out with your family, go out for a jog, listen to your favorite music playlist — whatever it takes to clear your head), and then start considering the alternatives. As you await decisions from other schools you applied to, start to consider a back up plan just in case. You still have many options to get a great education and pursue your dreams.

Among those issues includes global warming, our dependence on fossil fuel, saving our endangered wildlife, and ensuring that we have safe and sufficient water. There is one environmental issue, however, that streams across all these areas, and threatens the safety of our country, and of many bodies of water all over the world, and that is the issue of Oil Spills. An oil spill can be defined as, â€Å"an unintentional release of crude oil or refined oil products into the environment.† Oil spills are considered to be a major source of chemical pollution. Most of these spills occur through human error, however, there are cases where oil seeps through deposits under the ocean floor. These spills can occur on land, in the ocean, and even when oil is spilled down storm drains that lead directly into lakes and rivers. Not only do oil spills threaten to destroy our ecosystem and endanger our wildlife, oil spills can be harmful to human beings as well. The reason that this is so stems from the fact that oil itself is considered to be â€Å"semi-volatile.† This means that it can evaporate into the air and create a heavy vapor which lingers and can be breathed in by humans, and can travel deeply into people’s lungs. This can in turn cause many health issues such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, and even difficulty breathing. The 12 Steps are Vital in Successful Counseling In Counseling for Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the need to use different techniques is an iatrical part of the process. Working with an individual that is either entering into recovery or actively in recovery, the clinician must take their time with introducing the 12 Steps. The individual may not be open to the 12 Step philosophy right away. Addiction is very complex and actively affects the person on a daily basis; therefore, it is so important to begin from the onset of counseling to create a structured program. There are many different types of counseling approaches for people who are in an active addiction or at the beginning stages of getting help. Finding effective ways of maintaining sobriety can be extremely difficult and challenging. In counseling the individual must begin with gaining trust in the therapist. Under our study the passage of the story Doctor in the house written by a famous British writer and an assistant editor of the British Medical Journal of the 20 th century Richard Gordon who worked also as a ships surgeon, but left his medical practice in 1952. The story Doctor in the house is one of Gordons twelve Doctor books and is noted for witty description of a medical students years of professional training. Doctor in the house is not really intriguing title for the story, but, perhaps, this simplicity makes this story so attractive for an experienced reader, who is able after looking through passages to find extremely interesting phrases, word combinations, unusual style of writing and etc. Speaking about the style of the story we can say that it is autobiography. The plot of the passage is build round an unpleasant inevitability, we mean the final examination of medical students. Gordon. Author tells us about him nothing, because he wants to say that Gordon is an ordinary student. Author uses indirect method of characterization, and we can learn something of him only through his feelings. And we see the exams through his own eyes. The story is told from first person narration. The composition of this text consists of the following components: exposition, when the author gives the concept of an examination. Narration, when the author describes passing the examinations, written paper and viva, also an interesting story about marking the papers at Cambridge. The tension reaches its highest degree when poor Gordon almost believe in his fail. And the climax, when the Author describes how the Secretary of the Committee calls out Gordon’s name, because in that moment we become interested in his results, do he pass or fail. The author deliberately postpones the denouement keeping the reader in pressing anticipation. It comes in the last paragraph, when he hears the magic word â€Å"Pass†. The main idea of the text is that the examination is nothing more than an investigation of man’s knowledge. We learn about the students well, because the author created true-to-life characters, even more so the Author was passing the examinations himself. The key word is examination, because the action is spanned around it. And he employs a lot of expressive means and stylistic devices to make the story interesting and exciting. The text is emotionally moving, and some details produce an emotional reaction. There are a lot of epithets, metaphors, similes, hyperboles, metonymies and etc. For example by a simile â€Å"the final examinations are something like death† the Author shows condition of a student before an examination, â€Å"like a prize-fighter† also shows a contest, then the author compares, using the simile, the students that want to produce a certain impression and looking at professor like the â€Å"impressionable music enthusiasts gazing at the solo violinist†. Medical textbooks compared through metaphor to a â€Å"well-trodden paths†. The simile â€Å"porters†¦.. like the policemen† shows how severe and threatening they seems , a metaphor â€Å"†¦frustrated brilliance† is about a gone hope of a student. By the syntactic parallelism â€Å"The world stood still. The traffic stopped, the plants ceased growing, men were paralysed, the clouds hung in the air, the winds dropped, the tides disappeared, the sun halted in the sky† and the simile â€Å"like a man just hit by a blackjack† Author gives a perfect description of Gordon’s condition before and after he finds out his exam results. The text is full of epithets, that make it more expressive. For example, â€Å"Flagrant cheating†, â€Å"depressing experience†, and so on. â€Å"Silence and stillness (synonyms), like an unexploded bomb(simile)† very exactly depicts the picture of the minute when every student was waiting for his/her marks. And Author gives a chain of synonyms for word â€Å"to fail : †Ã¢â‚¬Å"One comes down, one muffs, one is ploughed, plucked, or pipped†. To make us sure that this exams was really hard Author uses special medical lexis – tetanus. In my opinion, not so many people know what it is and even more how to treat it. Also there are one idiom judgement day. Author uses it to show how important and, at the same time, very hard to pass the oral examination is. With the help of antonomasia we see their real character the Nonchalant, the Frankly Worried, the Crammer, the Old Stager. We can easily understand what stands for this nicknames. Also Author tries to make us believe that is story really happened. He uses a lot of places that still exist. For instance, St. Swithin’s Hospital, Old Bailey and Cambridge. And we can be sure that the story takes place in some university in Britain. The general atmosphere created by the author is mostly bright, amusing, full of irony, but sometimes it is not, especially after the viva . To my mind, this story is very interesting and exciting. Gordons wonderful mastery of the language permits him to keep the reader tense till the denouement. In such a little extract of a book he was able to depict the not only the procedure of examination, but also feelings of students. I am student and I know in my own experience that it is really difficult to pass the examination, and Richard Gordon succeed in describing the all little details of this event.
